Automotive market in Russia will see a further slight decrease this year before the start of recovery in 2011

The Russian automotive industry has been particularly hard-hit by the global recession. Are there signs of recovery?

This was the main question that was addressed to Boris Firsov, Partner at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, panelist at autoMOTIVE Logistics Leaders conference last week in the Hotel National in Moscow.

The Russian car market lost almost half of the size in 2009. Downward trend will continue short-term, sales in 2010 will decrease to 1.3 million cars. Despite this heavy drop, Boris Firsov expects the start of gradual market recovery in 2011. In 2012 figures can achieve the pre-crisis level.

But Roland Berger expert was less optimistic talking about logistic market recovery. Imports of new cars to Russia in 2009 dropped from 1.4 to 0.5 million, hammering the car logistics business. Start of car logistics market recovery is expected next year with a major increase in 2012, however even by then sales of imported cars will not achieve the pre-crisis level.

That creates a pressure in the market. "We are seeing signs of car logistics players getting more competitive, said Boris Firsov. The companies will need to improve quality and diversify logistic services, as consolidation process and entry of major international providers will force minor players out of the market".
